"Sainsbury's strain" perhaps I should call it (until updated by a knowledgeable horticulturist). I bought these bulbs from that store just to see what came up. Two bulbs have flowered so far - both like this.
It keys as subspecies Aestivum (dimensions and denticulate stem). (The other bulb had four flowers on the stem.)

John Grimshaw has commented that such a variant is not recorded so I have to assume it is caused by stress (the shelves of the supermarket!) for the while and see what the flowers are like next year !
