Dr E Charles Nelson says this "is almost certainly P. grandiflora - I would not expect to see vulgaris growing like that - it's quite characteristic of P. grandiflora, however, even to the tiny hibernaculae [over wintering parts] around the base. [The hibernaculae of P. vulgaris are] nowhere near as obvious and not as prolific - the reason why P.
grandiflora does so well in Kerry is largely due to its vegetative reproduction, I think."

It turns out that the site I stumbled on for this has had P. grandiflora and P. vulgaris both reported and I did not really spend enough time checking what was what. This one has been re-assigned as P. grandiflora.

Thanks to Dr E Charles Nelson for helping me out (a lot) with this).
