Brian Cox says: "I brought back a slab of peat from the Orkneys some years ago and was surprised to find that after being out in the rain the plant in question grew on the peat, subsequently the same slab of peat has produced some three years later the northern marsh orchid and much later an Erica.
Seeds were evidently dormant in this block of peat which was going to be used when dried on an Orcadian's peat fire.
The plant in question has just been identified as a Soldanella from a photograph sent to the RHS".
